NAACP Middletown Branch
2025 Freedom Fund Luncheon
Sunday, September 28, 2:00 - 4:00 PM
Casa Mia Latin Kitchen, Middletown
Honorees:
Friends of Robert Lewis
Sadie’s Bookseum
The Union AME Church
The NAACP Freedom Fund was established in 1953 and intended to be a ten-year program. After the assassination of Medgar Evers, a civil rights hero and NAACP Mississippi Field Secretary, the NAACP declared the Freedom Fund would carry on indefinitely in tribute to Evers: “Until the job of emancipating our people is complete.”
Today the Freedom Fund supports the NAACP’s vital work serving our community, both here in Orange County and nationwide, and branches host Freedom Fund events to provide a social atmosphere, honor local community heroes, and raise much-needed funding.
At this year’s event, the Middletown Branch voted to honor three organizations that have worked closely with us since our reactivation less than two years ago:
- Friends of Robert Lewis, a small group of concerned citizens who formed to ensure the 1892 lynching of Robert Lewis would not be forgotten from history, and who lead an annual remembrance walk in Port Jervis;
- Sadie’s Bookseum, a vital resource for minority communities in and around Middletown, operated by its founder, Yaa Yaa Whaley Williams; and
- The Union AME Church in Warwick, whose congregation and leadership have been close partners in helping our branch return to active service.
